To the Christians, a Horned God was the Devil, therefor the pagans were devil-worshippers. Most of those persecuted were not practitioners of the Craft. In fact only two girls were possible practitioners in the salem trials. The Craft is a religion that has evolved with man-kind and was almost wiped off the face of the earth by an ignorant, and malicious people. It was only in 1952 that the laws against witchcraft were rebuked in England. As for the US, it is a registered religion under the law. The Craft is beautiful, and ancient. Pagans were the Christians rivals, because it was the main religion of the Christian leaders' people. You will find all this information in Raymond Bucklands complete guide to Witchcraft. He was the first Witch to openly practice in the US. He spoke for the Witches so that they could come out of hiding and practice openly for the first time in hundreds of years.

There is no absolute reason.I think mainly because of fear and greed.Puritans believed in predestination and no one knew who was and who wasnt going to hell so they tried to live their lives the best way possible.They believed the world was the devils playground and that there were those who were doing his bidding so people who were elderly,poor sick,nurses etc were usually targets.But there were those who also had a ton of land and wealth who were targeted as well because once that person is hanged all of his items belong now to the city and people could bid on them and they would be able to have things they once couldnt.
I could go on and on but Im not I'll stop here

It is very terrible. they should teach more about it in the American schools. I learned about the Holocaust over and over, and the Witches were persecuted as badly. In Greece, witch hunts still exist. People are still narrow-minded. Christianity narrows the mind of someone who could be great.

i agree with all other poeple on this. I did a project on Salem last year for school and it seemed to be started by girls who didn't want to get in trouble for not ollowing the rules so they acussed their servant of bewitching them to do it.... and all just tumbled down hill from there. but thats the most popular of reasons that i saw while researching. but all other reasons that everone else stated helped create the enviroment to start this and helped to urge it on; those two girls lit it on fire with the first match.

Actually your all wrong; it was about jealously, pure and simple, stupid girls playing stupid pranks that went too far; Historical proof tells us that those who were accused of Witch Craft were either Rich or beautiful, it started out with one and went too far; and became a game to get revenge. It ended tragically, and finally almost sixty years later, it was revealed the majority of those who were accused of witch craft were rich and again, beautiful, the England Church and Court put a stop to it, immediately after that; it had nothing to do with religion and all to do with revenge.
