WASHINGTON — The widows of two combat veterans sued the government Monday for not allowing Wiccan symbols on their husbands' military headstones.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs allows military families to choose any of 38 authorized headstone images. The list includes commonly recognized symbols for Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism, as well as those for smaller religions such as Sufism Reoriented, Eckiankar and the Japanese faith Seicho-No-Ie.

The Wiccan pentacle, a five-pointed star surrounded by a circle, is not on the list, an omission that the widows say is unconstitutional.

The lawsuit was filed by Roberta Stewart, whose husband, Nevada National Guard Sgt. Patrick Stewart, was killed in combat in Afghanistan last year, and Karen DePolito, whose husband, Jerome Birnbaum, is a Korean War veteran who died last year.

Wiccans worship the Earth and believe they must give to the community. Some consider themselves "white" or good witches, pagans or neo-pagans. Approximately 1,800 active-duty service members identify themselves as Wiccans, according to 2005 Defense Department statistics.

In a country that says that we have the freedom of religon that is sad that they would not allow a symbol of good on a head stone.

i know , there telling my soon to be ex hubby that he can not have that on his. he want to fight it tho so i was online see about other cases like his and know how ppl on here love to updated on there news i was more then happier to post it

I agree with both of you, this country was founded on princples. and it seems like everyday we lose one after another.

and personally i think it is going to get worse.

oh yes it is and ppl are just going to sit there and watch it happen is another sad thing about it . but i guess if no one step up to say something then there no point and fight it

well the only thing we can really do is vote. and in my opinion the man who just got voted into the presidental office, is going to make it ten times worse for everyone. espically the military

yes he is i didn't vote tho i really want to , don't take this the wrung his out look on the army is **** he want to bring all the pm and all back in one year if that happen us going over would have been for nothing cuz as soon as we leave there going to go back there old ways or be over ran with people trying to take over . i'm sorry but he need to think of a lot on what he want , don't get me wrong id love to everyone back home safe seeing how Ive lost a lot people over there since it binging but it to soon to pull out that fast
