Blood Moon
Blood Moon
It had been a chilly night. The first signs of winter were dawning. The sound of crunching leaves crinkled beneath our feet. Most of the branches above were bare with their summer time clothing. We walked with in a forest that I knew well, lit by a full moon beaming down. Cara had become a very close friend of mine over the years. We had happened to meet each other at a debate during a council gathering. Not only had we found out that we agreed on many subjects but that our jobs titled the same.
Her sire and others of the family had come to our dwelling for a visit on a possible upcoming war. For a while the lycans had been silent. During the gatherings and many meetings most of the lycan clans had started to show up less and less. Cara and I both agreed that there were things going on behind closed doors.
The lycans that were so involved had now become more distant. Their well thought debates had become ones of short speeches. These gathering were ones that would have many finale decisions that would come to an agreement for lycan and vampires. We would expect for the lycans not to have much to say but then normally at the end they would speak up. Much like Cara and I they would wait to see what it was that many others would articulate and then put forth their knowledge. It was not like them to be so inactive.
After a long night of both of our families Cara and I had decided that we wanted to take in the night air. We wanted to have the alone time that best friends should have. We both knew that this may be impossible though. For I always had a shadow following me around. Michael thy body guard and shadow. Tired of having a shadow and wanting just a few hours alone, I had ask for a private moment with Abraham at the end of discussion.
Once alone with my darling husband I asked him if he would have Michael stay behind just this one time while Cara and I took a short walk. Smiling he agreed with my request. Just as I was about to leave the room I stopped to only turn back to him. Giving him a smirk I say to him that he ends up having Michael follow me without being in sight I would rebuke at his action. I said that if I would happen to find out, even years later, he would have to go a whole month without, being, seeing, or even talking to his wife. With a new understanding and knowing that I would keep to my word, he had agreed that I could have two hours alone. Jumping up, like a school girl, I kiss him on the cheek. Abraham beamed at my simple enjoyment.
Yet, with war on the tongs of our families we should have known better. We were only going to walk around the manor but the forest and its beauty called to us. The night had been very silent as we took our walk.
“Do you think that we may have a war approaching us?” Cara asked as we made our way back home.
We had already been walking for an hour now. Enjoying every silent moment without the extra crunch of a third party. The wind blew slightly and not a creature made a sound. We could actually hear each other speak. We were the only sound with in this wonderful thick vegetation of trees.
“You know as well as I do, Cara, that it is not like the lycans to say nothing. For them to speak very little because when they do speak they bring their point to a clear speech. It has been as though they have been giving us a cold shoulder.” I had return with an answer.
“Yes, Tomas didn’t even meet up with us for our normal luncheon.” Cara sighed with a disappointment.
Tomas was a lycan that at every gathering would meet up with us at a small cafe for lunch. In which the three of us would continue debating on subjects that had not yet come to a conclusion.
For a few moments our words had become silent as we moved on. Taking her gaze from the path before us Cara broke the stillness. “That isn’t like him you know.”
“I know!” I said with a comprehension to her remark. “We both know that those much like our sires will start becoming anxious and will demand why the lycans have been acting as they have.” I say to her as we slow down to a stop.
“I can see it now” Cara begins. She puts her fists to her hips and puffs out her chest. Lowering her voice she says, “My name is Jonathan and I demand that all of you dogs tell us why it is that you have not been active.”
Smiling at her playfulness I decide to engage in the amusement. Taking the collar on my shirt, I lift it up close to my neck. With one hand to my side and the other portraying as though it had a cane within it. “If you don’t tell us, we’ll just have to kill all of you.” Making my voice sound steady and deadly calm as thy husband would.
Laughter erupted into the night air as we playfully mocked at the way our sires would eventually act. Once we took control of our delight, we continued on with our walk.
With her eyes forward Cara spoke up first once again, “Some times I wonder if we should do just that. Debating gets us nowhere and if there is something about to happen then we won’t know it until they struck.” Her voice softly trailed off.
As I thought about her words I let out a small humph. Smiling lightly I spoke, “So, do I old friend. So, do I.” pausing for a second I begin again with the thought in my head, “Yet, if all of us should happen to do this then if we struck first with out in true knowledge it would be us in the wrong. Because if we strike and the lycans were truly not being up to something then our action would start a war that was not needed.”
Nodding her head Cara replied back, “I agree.”
Once again our conversation had trailed off and the night air is quite. As we walked along a noise broke stillness. A bush adjacent from us had rustled to reveal a dark four legged figure. Jared from the sudden fuss Cara and I jumped braking us both out of a gaz. slowly we watched as the dark figure came up to us. His black fur shined in the pale moon light. As he sat down next to us we both began to settle down.
Just as a smile was about to arrive on both of our faces a sudden burst of sound from a tree branch braking brought fear? Quickly looking down at our new companion, “ E-bon go get Abraham and Jonathan at once.” My voice heavy with concern. The panther shot off, like the wind, into the dark forest ahead.
With a violent thud to the ground before us landed an enormous dog. Our mouths gaped open as Cara and I reveal our menacing fangs, as the snarling beast breathed before our face. Recognizing that the creature had dark brown fur covering its body from head to toe, that this was no pup. Comprehending that without our weapon Cara and I were in danger.
Immense arms forcefully grabbed Cara by the shoulders. Paralyzing her still the monster lunged in for his attack. Large jaws opened wide pronouncing the many teeth with in. Its razors ripped into Cara’s chest sinking deeply.
Fingers extended in growth as I bound onto the beasts back. Feet dug into the ribs as I crouch close down holding myself steady. Lifting arms up powerfully moving them inward, I sink my knife like nails deep into the lycans neck. An immense howl echoed from the lycan in pain. Dropping thy beloved friend the monster took hold of the thing producing its agony. Souring through the air, as it flung me over it’s should, smashing my back into a tree.
Slowly sitting up eyes followed the beast as it leaped and landed in front of my gaz. Staring up into a distorted face, those black ball let me know that this was a mere warring. To ensure that the lycan would not be fallowed claws slashed across the middle of my stomach.
Though the fight had seemed to take forever it was only moments when it had all ended. As quickly the enormous dog came, the lycan had gone.
Pain seared threw the muscles that had ruptured open. As the four wide wounds gushed out the liquid from within. With one arm I grasped my stomach and used the other to pull myself next to Cara. The right side of her chest lay on the ground next to her. The flesh was hanging on by a thin layer of skin. Eyes watched the muscle, inside the other half, slowly beating. My eyes closed tight with knowing that it would not beat much longer.
Tears ran down the side of chilled cheek bones, as I watched my old friend gradually die. Pushing the pain in the back o my mind, I lift Cara’s ribs back to their joining partners. Laying next to her, placing her head on my chest. Scarlet redden the areas of clothing that had not yet been soaked up by my own blood.
I began to feel myself become heavy with sleep. Eyes watched the night sky as they feel upon a red moon.
Thank you all that have read this. I hope that you enjoy just as much as I did writing it.
