And Bex, I'd suggest you start studying meditation and look into the Psychic Vampire Codex, it has a LOT of good information for you to think about. You need to look into information about energy manipulation and such, see how much of it rings true to you.

I highly doubt training martial arts would be detrimental in any way. I would say it would be positive. I personally have done martial arts for years and it has many benefits just by itself. I spose the only thing you might need to watch out for during awakening was if anything you are awakening to might affect your control with partners in sparring or other exercises, eg if you were in a period of rapid strength increase and couldnt control the power you exerted on someone and maybe hurt them or something. But its not really that likely. Its about the same risk as any other interaction anyway. And martial arts teaches you control over your body and it might help develop your mind and energy too. There are so many benifits.
