Churchill, Hitler and the Unnecessary War
I'm not much of a war buff, obviously because I don't like war and don't have a fascination with tanks, bombs, fighter planes etc. The older I get the more attracted I am to science, economy and history, less inclined to death and destruction.
But lately I've become interested in Pat Buchanan's new book, "Churchill, Hitler and the Unnecessary War", as well as "Human Smoke" by Nicholson Baker. Both have received a lot of attention at LewRockwell.com where I hang out all the time.
I know there were some WWII threads here, but this approach is pretty different. Pat's position is that if not for continued bungling by the British, WWII could not have happened. No holocaust, no reorganization of Europe and no end to the British Empire.
Christopher Hitchens (the bad Hitchens brother, sic semper tyrannis) has challenged Buchanan on his dissection of history. This is interesting because Hitchens is very intelligent, but also a gatekeeper for state power, lies and history.
Buchanan through careful analysis seeks to prove that most of what people believe about WWII is inaccurate, and the other book I mentioned, Human Smoke, is a compilation of speeches, news, articles and interviews from the period, which also tell a different story than many people seem to believe today.
Here are some of my favorite articles regarding both books. It would be interesting to read the comments of WWII enthusiasts on this forum, to gain a broader perspective.

WWII is one of my favorite subjects when it comes to history. What amazes me is that if it wasnt for the USA Hitler would have won. And everyone you(the U.S.) helped has now turned their back to you.

Hitler would finally have been beaten by the soviets... why? because they had a lot of ground to retreate on, and to sorround on.
I agree with you that a lot of countries the US helped have turned their backs on them.
Only Denmark and the Uk is still helping them.

Thats where I disagree with you Morgoth, I feel that if the U.S. didn't get involved, Russia would have lose too much ground and people to actually be able to really origanize a decent defence much less a counter attack. Though I agree with you Abe, almost all of the countries that the U.S. has helped accepted the help but then once they were safe they threw their support for us out the window and into the trash can.

there would not have been enough german soldiers to control all of europe and the soviet i think. Resistance movements would have thrown the germans out, if the russians wouldn't have done it.

I can see that but by the time that they would have reorganized to counterattack the government of Russia would have fallen and many more lives would have been lost and overall the area of Europe would have become a barren land of corpses, craters and burning reckage.

some history-experts should try to re-enact WWII WITHOUT the US involved in the war.

Oohh, I see now, that would be an interesting experiment. Is the U.S. still allowed to give weapons or complete uninvolvment?
