Is this supposed to be a philosophy thread?
Here's a question of mine:
Why do we (or most of us) feel such a strong need to survive? For it doesn't mean anything for the universe. Earth may explode (what won't happen, but it's the thought that counts, and some meteorites are big enough to torn our planet in half...), and that would be the end of life. That's it.
(I'm an atheist, although I believe that there can be a greater force in every aspect of our being.)
My own thoughts: I believe in the evolution theory of Darwin. So I'd say that our will to survive has evolved in our genes throughout the millennia, since the very beginning of life.

I think that none of us really want to die. That is why we want to survive so much. And as far as Darwin goes, sorry, but i did not come from a ape.

My Grandfather and I talked about this a few months ago. He decided that, for the human race, like almost every other animal, the whole point in life is to carry on the species. Although, individually, we all have different aspirations and dreams, the main point of us being here is to keep our race going. Which is a fair arguement, but I think there's more to it than that. If that was the case, why were we given the ability to think and feel emotions, etc.? I don't think there is a reason for us, as humans in general, to survive - but because we were blessed with intelligence and all else, we contruct an individual meaning for our own lives. It might be materialistic or unorthodox but each person decides why they want to live. For example, I feel a 'strong need to survive' because I want a lovely wedding and a family, whereas someone else wants to live because they long to run a marathon before they croak. So, if that made any sense at all, that's what i think. (:
