When you talk about the blind man who is blind from birth, that is a defect and not nessicarily making him a defect, his eyes not developing to be used, but for his hearing to become more accute is evolution at work. As for vampirism, we are currently still evolving, but until vampirism has reached a state of balance, were one would not have to feed, that would be the finished evolution. So technically at this point what causes us to be the way that we are is a defect, an incomplete change, but we as living beings have evolved around the energy defencicy by feeding.
